HL 9

Wednesday Reading Task:

On a Wednesday, your reading task will be to read a chapter from ‘Journey to the River Sea by Eva Ibbotson:

How do you think Maia felt when the twins were not there to meet her at the docks?

What do you think about the author’s description of Furo? Why do think the author has described him this way?

‘Then she shook her hand, ashamed of her thoughts, and ran off after the others’ – What do you think happened here for Maia to be ashamed of her thoughts?

What are your first impressions of the Carter family? Use evidence from the text to help you answer the question.

On Page 50, you find out that Gwendolyn had dug her fingernail into Maia’s palm. Why do you think that she did this?

When Maia is looking out of the window in her room, the authors use of language changes to describe things in a way that tells you Maia is excited by what she sees. What language does the author use?

Why do you think that the Indians working for Mr Carter had left?

On Page 55, Beatrice reads the definition when to use a comma. Can you write your own definition of when to use a comma.

Why do you think Miss Minton’s most prized possessions are her books?

Within this chapter there are lots of examples of the Carters being unkind to the Indians both to their face and through the actions. How does this make you feel? Why?

We will start with a revision of conversion facts between millimetres, centimetres, metres and kilometres. Using these facts, we will apply these to some real life problems around the Olympics. We will also bring in non-standard units thinking about how many laps different track races at the Olympics are.

Follow the video and complete the activities linked to it.

Then we will look at some different examples of metamorphic rock and discuss how their properties make them fit for their uses. For this lesson, you will need a pencil, a piece of paper and a ruler.
