First Forest School – Team Building

This morning the Kestrels enjoyed a muddy session with Ian. The class were given several pieces of guttering and a ping pong ball. Ian placed a bucket a few metres away and set them the challenge of moving the ball along the guttering from him to the bucket, without touching it or dropping it!

The emphasis was on team work and communication. Initially, the class dropped the ball a few times and were rushing to complete the task. When they began to talk and listen to each other, they travelled further towards the bucket. At last they made it and were quite pleased with themselves.

Animals including humans

This term, our science topic is ‘Animals including humans. We will be studying the lives of different animals from gestation to old age.

This week we learnt the word gestation. The Eagles began by considering what the word gestation meant with guesses from ‘a posh gas station’ to ‘an overpopulation it guests’

Can you explain what the word gestation means and how it effects humans?

Light investigation – Part 2

Following on from our recent light investigations, we have been continuing to look at light and investigation what happens in the absence of it. We investigated shadows and how shadows change depending on the object creating the shadow.

The children also learnt about the words: transparent, translucent and opaque. I wonder if they can explain to you what these words mean?

Light Investigations

Over the last few weeks, we have been investigating light and how it affects our daily lives. We have been sent a crime scene investigation and are trying to work out who commited the crime through a series of clues linked to light and the rules of how it works.

So far, we know that light travels in straight lines and reflects from objects into our eyes. We have eliminated 2 suspects from our investigation.

Keep looking to find out who the culprit was…

Day and night continued

In Science, Year 5 have been developing their understanding of day and night. They have learnt all about orbits and how light travels. We also discussed why the moon appears to changes shape during its orbit around the earth.

At the end of the lesson they created a graph, consisting of sunrises and sunsets relating to cities around the UK.

Ask them to explain to you why the times change according to your relative position on the globe.
