Today, Year 5 carried out their light experiment to explain why shadows change length during the day. They made predictions based on what they had learned in previous lessons and gathered results based on their observations.

A platform where we share all of our learning to help you engage with us more!

Today, the Kestrels performed the poem ‘The Kestrel’ by Wilfred Wilson Gibson for National Poetry Day. They performed the poem, which consisted of 5 verses, to the whole school without any prompts or words.
This week in Science, the children have been learning about how our solar system works. They learnt how the planets orbit the sun and came up with their own explanation of how our solar system functions.
Great practise…. lots of passing, receiving and footwork!

Last week, Year 5 designed and built their own bottle rockets.
They were set the challenge of creating an attachment that allowed their shuttles to detach from the fuselage mid flight. In the afternoon, we were able to test out how successful these attachments were.
The start of the World Cup 2019 means one thing in Dance….. the Haka.

Today Year 5 learnt all about the planets in our solar system, their relative sizes in relation to other planets and their distances from the Sun.
The children also learn a mnemonic to remember the order of planets in terms of their distance from the Sun.

What a first week in Year 5!
This week as part of a whole school project we have looked creating our own characters based on our values. We have written poems and character descriptions.
We can’t wait for you to meet Ronald the Respectful Robot!
We have also thought about what we would like to be when we grow up and about how we can work towards achieving that.
We were very excited to find out who we were going to be sat next to. Even the people who have to sit close to Miss Dixon!
We have drawn half of our face. I wonder what we’d look like with only half a face?
Our favourite class game is Countdown Numbers. Two children in the class have already managed to do it quicker than Miss Dixon.

We have been very busy this week settling into our new class. We were introduced to our new topic of Space Explorers and we created our new topic book front covers.
In PSHE we learnt about empathy, where we created our own characters, wrote our character descriptions and created an empathy class poem.
Kestrels Class
Our topic this term is Space Explorers and we will be reading George’s Secret Key to the Universe. Our hook event will be held on Monday 16th, where the children will be challenged to build and launch their own rockets. If you able to donate any empty 2l plastic bottles for this project, it would be greatly appreciated.
