Reading Task 3:
Read the following two chapters of ‘The Roman Quests: Escape from Rome’. When you have finished reading, answer the questions below. Remember to answer using full sentences. Answer the questions knowing the reading might not know the answers.
- What does the author mean by ‘Juba rounded on Fronto’? What kind of action is this?
- What made the hair on Juba’s stand up?
- In your own words, explain the emotions he is feeling here.
- How does the author describe the warrant being destroyed? Why was destroying the warrant not as final as the character might have first thought?
- Why do you think Juba has to clench his jaw to control his emotions? (p114)
- How was communication different in these times? What methods do the characters use at the end of Chapter 30?
- Why do you think the author described to the morning light as ‘pearly’? What could this be in reference to?
- What do you think ‘sprats’ are? Use the context clues on the page to help you (p121).

Earlier in the year, we wrote Non-Chronological reports about planets. We looked at the features and planned our own. Can you plan and write your own non-chronological report about something of your choice. You might want to write about your favourite hobby or a sport you like to watch on TV. You might want to write about something that interest you and you know lots about. You could research something you know nothing about and write a report about that.

Using what you have read in ‘Roman Quests’, your character description and your setting description, write a narrative set in Ancient Rome. Use the structure above to help you plan out your story before writing it and use the mat below to make sure you include features to make your writing exciting and interesting.
